the little things we hear

These quotes start off near the end of May, which is apparently the last time I updated this blog. Hmmm... I wonder what happened? Oh yes, our little one started walking in earnest and then climbing and getting into everything. So, needless to say, there is little time around here for this! :) But enjoy these thoughts from 2/3 of our children. Mia is sure to be there soon!

E: "my favorite thing to collect is information!"

J: "I need to swim so I don't go deep, deep, deep and (ugh - sticks tongue out and rolls eyes back) - I might die."

E: do i get a prize for all that i did in kindergarten and the big awards i got?
Me: yes, you get to go to first grade

Me: does anyone want to pray?
J: neigh, moo, doggy, kitty, dis food, amen

Last night at dinner:
Me: E. you need to finish your milk. You asked for it, so please finish it... or you can put it in the fridge and save it for later. J. has started doing that to save his drinks.
J: Yes, E. I put mine in the fridge, so I don't waste it. You a waster. This is the line. (*indicates line with hands) You want to be here, away from the line. Not over here, doing wrong things. Over here, doing right things.

J's prayer today:
Thank you God for light, and all the animals, and the bugs, and the bugs eating the other bugs, and the dirt. Amen.

Meanwhile, M., while not quite quote-worthy yet, can definitely communicate her needs and wants. She has popped out with clearly pronouncing these words 1-2 times in addition to her typical mom & dadda: more, up, emma, jack, dog. She also seems to mimic the cadence of sounds and one of our friends swears she heard her say "drink" when she wanted some water. She also responds yes/no by shaking her head to questions. And she tried to say broccoli when looking at a package of broccoli applesauce.

Whew, What a few weeks we had in May. Emma was sick with strep throat and ended up having an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin. Our shower door fell off and shattered for no apparent reason. Ryan got into poison ivy or something irritable and was covered in a rash for weeks and finally recovered after two shots in his rear and lots of medication. We were getting pretty well known at the doctor's office.

Mia's check up was great. She is in the 97th percentile for height and head circ. and 95th for weight (28 3/4 inches, 21 pounds). Emma was also great. She is in the 25th percentile for weight and 50th for height (40 pounds, 46 inches). Jack is still about 3 pounds behind her.

Birthday Girl

This year was challenging for our girl to select a theme. She went back and forth for weeks, deciding between Frozen, Aurora, Adventure, Safari, Tinkerbell, Fairy Garden, or Garden Butterfly Birthday. I was excited to do something other then a princess, so I was glad she chose Garden Butterfly. :) We made tissue paper flowers, lots of bug themed food, and gave away painted birdhouses and worms in dirt cups as thank you gifts. For the activities, we had a bug scavenger hunt (with plastic bugs hidden around the yard), paint your own birdhouse, pin the butterfly on the flower, and garden critter relay (think spider crawl, butterfly flutter, inchworm, frog hop, bunny hop, squirrel run). After all the outdoor fun, the kids looked like they might melt, so we came in for refreshments, and cake and ice cream of course. All in all, it was a good day and we celebrated Emma turning six. We can't believe she's six! Where did the time go? We are so grateful for her exuberant, creative, kind presence in our family. We can't wait to spend many more years with her!

Christmas in PNW

We had a wonderful visit in Washington with our friends and family for the holidays. It seems out of place to be posting on it now, but we didn't want to overlook it. It was a whirlwind tour. Mia had a lot of "firsts" on this trip: solo flight with Dad, rolling over front to back, rolling over back to front, meeting Santa, Christmas, and going to a service at our church in Seattle.

Just went for a run. Yay! And I got to run with Kenny too.

Port Orchard had snow when we came... and we made gingerbread houses. The elf was found climbing the tree with the angels.

For our Christmas gifts, Nana took Emma and I to see the Nutcracker by PNB. It was so fun to share with Emma and my cousin, Gramma, Great Aunt and stepmom. We even had treats at intermission at a reserved table in the restaurant.

Christmas Eve service at the church we used to attend... we tried a "family" service in the hall rather than the one in the sanctuary since the timing worked out better. It wasn't quite the same, but we still got to sing some carols and light advent candles.
